Guest Lecture on 
“Value Based Technical Education and Research for Holistic Development of Society”

Dr. Ram Gopal, Former Director Defence Laboratory, DRDO Jodhpur delivered a lecture to the students of Amity University Gwalior on “Value Based Technical Education and Research for Holistic Development of Society” in the Seminar Hall on 24 September 2014 at 1415 hours.He stressed on the need to identify, develop and disseminate techniques by which engineering students and practicing engineers can be motivated to imbibe human values and appreciate their impact on technology development,professional ethics and human welfare. He focused on the creation of an awareness within the students of technical community that the technical skills and human values are essentially complementary.

The programme was attended by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen V K Sharma, AVSM (Retd), Heads of Schools/Departments, faculty members, and students of Amity University. A vote of thanks was proposed by the convener of the programme, Prof (Dr.) Bikram K. Bahinipati, Dy. Director, Amity School of Engineering & Technology.

Amity Institute of Biotechnology, Amity University, Gwalior organised the first lecture of Popular Lecture Series, sponsored by DBT, New Delhi on 23 Sept 2014 in its campus at Maharajpura. Dr. Manoj Prasad, Senior Scientist, National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi delivered his talk to a large gathering of students including those from various schools of Gwalior . Dr Prasad’s  lecture was focused on Biotechnological Applications for Agricultural Development and Food Security in India.  He  discussed the recent findings of his research on foxtail millet. This crop was regarded initially as  a neglected crop but then emerged as a model system with rich genetic and genomic resources. He emphasized on the development of genomic resources at large-scale and providing unrestricted access to the research community. This would certainly accelerate molecular breeding for crop improvement. During his lecture, he  also discussed the crop’s potential a biotic stress tolerance and encouraged the audience to explore the respective molecular mechanism which would enable the generation of crops with improved stress tolerance. This can lead to ensure food security in the scenario of global climate change. During the interaction with students, he emphasized on morphology, structural and functional genomics of plant. He discussed the nutritional and medicinal properties of foxtail millet and mentioned presence of the higher seed protein, crude fat and minerals content. Further, he discussed the medicinal properties of germinated seeds for curing dyspepsia, celiac disease, weak digestion and abdominal food stagnancy.

On this occasion, Lt. Gen. V. K. Sharma, AVSM (Retd.) the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Amity University Gwalior, emphasized on the potential health benefits of Foxtail millet. He further the  motivated students for doing research on this crop for improvement in quality and yield.

The lecture ended with the concluding remarks by Prof. (Dr.) Rajesh Singh Tomar, Head, Amity Institute of Biotechnology and Dean (Academics), Amity University, Gwalior. In his  remarks he emphasized on the development of better genetic engineering methods to enhance the productivity of Foxtail millet. This could be a model crop for arid and semiarid areas. He concluded with a  Vote of Thanks to guest speaker for his informative talk. The seminar was followed by interaction of students with guest speaker Dr. Manoj Prasad.

Fourth Raising Day on 19 September 2014

19th Sept 2014 was celebrated with gaiety and fervor as the fourth Raising Day at Amity University Gwalior. The celebrations began with the felicitation of Additional President RBEF and Hon’ble Chancellor Amity University Rajasthan, Mr Aseem Chauhan who had kindly agreed to be the Chief Guest, sparing his valuable time and travelled down from Delhi for the occasion. The celebration started with Saraswati Vandana, which was followed by lighting of the lamp by Mr Aseem Chauhan, Lt Gen V K Sharma AVSM (Retd), Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Amity University Gwalior, Prof (Dr) S P Singh, Vice President Academics, Amity University, and Prof (Dr) R S Tomar, Dean Academics. After this the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor presented the Annual Report of the University. He traced the growth of the University which had started with just one block and 150 students to its present strength of over 1140 students with two academic blocks, two hostel blocks, and another academic block under construction. He also spoke of the successful placements at Amity University Gwalior. After the VC’s address, a short film made by ASCO, showcasing various activities of the University during Academic Year2013-14 was shown. This was followed by the address of Mr Aseem Chauhan. Mr Chauhan familiarized the students with the genesis of Amity as a concept and with the vision of Dr Ashok K Chauhan our beloved Founder President. He also shared with the students his success mantra BHAAG, wherein B stands for Behavior,H for Hard work, A for attitude, A again for Ambition, and G for God. After his address, Mr Chauhan and Lt Gen Sharma gave away the Academic Excellence Awards for the session 2013-14. The anniversary issue of our journal “The Amitian” was also released on this occasion. Towards the end the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Amity University M.P. Lt Gen V K Sharma AVSM (Retd) presented mementos to Mr Aseem Chauhan and to Prof (Dr) S P Singh. The morning ended with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Prof (Dr) R S Tomar. This was followed by Lunch with all HOIs/HODs.

The programme was streamed live from the Auditorium Block ‘B’ to Seminar Hall, Block ‘A’, so maximum students of AUMP could be a part of the proceedings. Later, Mr Aseem Chauhan also addressed the senior students (V and VII semester students) in the auditorium.

Mr Aseem Chauhan also held a press conference and spoke to the media. He said that we intend starting a school, adjacent to the University at Gwalior.

Mr Aseem Chauhan also inaugurated the new ASCO studio in the Academic Block ‘B’ and later, interacted with the students. The Vice Chancellor accompanied Mr Aseem Chauhan on his campus visit and showed him ‘B’ Block including the Library, Moot Court, Cafeteria, Hostel Blocks as well as the Academic Block ‘C’ which is under construction.

Mr Aseem Chauhan also addressed all the faculty members and interacted with all HOIs/HODs and senior functionaries of Amity University Gwalior. He also advised the faculty on CCSM i.e. Competence, Commitment and Self Motivation as the driving force to achieve academic as well as all round excellence.

Amity University Gwalior Celebrates World Ozone Day

The World Ozone Day was celebrated by Amity Eco-Club, on 16th September 2014 with enthusiasm& zest. The aim of the event was to communicate the effects of ozone and its depletion on environment and human race. The programme was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Amity University Gwalior, Lt Gen V K Sharma AVSM (Retd).  In his opening remarks, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor spoke of the life cycles on earth. He also stressed upon the need to conscientiously consider the aftermath & long term repercussion of scientific inventions. The Vice-Chancellor’s address was followed by the presentation of Dean Academics Prof. (Dr.) R.S Tomar who spoke on ‘Environment, Society & Human Values’. Prof. (Dr.) S.P Bajpai, Dean Research spoke with zeal & passion on ‘Ozone & Environment’.

The programme also included screening of several short films to bring about an awareness amongst the students regarding the environment. A campaign of “Clean Amity, Green Amity” was also launched during the proceedings by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor in which a movement of ‘Polythene free Amity Campus’ has been initiated. The programme concluded with a pledge, where the Amity University Gwalior family promised to be more responsible to the environment.

Amity School of CommunicationAmity University Gwalior organized a Mock Press Conference on Tuesday 16 September 2014. The program commenced with the lighting of the lamp by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor AUMP Lt Gen V K Sharma, AVSM (Retd) and Dean Academics AUMP Prof. (Dr.) R.S. Tomar.

The event began with Hon’ble Vice Chancellor’s opening remarks to the HOIs, faculty members, participants and all the students. The Mock Press Conference was organized with an idea to the communication skills of the students, prepare them to face press conferences and to provide them with a platform and opportunity to express their views and thoughts on various domains like Politics,Law, Entertainment, Corporate and Sports.   

The Mock Press Conference comprised three rounds, the preliminary round, semifinal and the final. In each round the participants were given two minutes to express their views on the given topic. This was followed by a question and answer round in which five questions were asked from each participant by the judges and from the audience.

The students were judged on their content, delivery, confidence and appearance, communications skills and handling of the questions. The final round was followed by declaration of the results. The first award was won by Mr Stanley Johnson (MBA I Semester), second prize was bagged by Niharika Bhowmik (BJMC I Semester) and the third prize was bagged by Ms Ruby Rajawat (BJMC III Semester).

Certificates were also distributed to the participants by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor accompanied by the panel of judges.

The program was concluded with the closing remarks delivered by Dr. Sumit Narula, Dy. Director and Head, Amity School of Communication.

Teachers’ Day at Amity University Gwalior

Students of Amity University, Gwalior, celebrated Teachers’ Day  on 5 Sept 2014 with  gaiety and gusto . The event was presided over by Lt Gen V K Sharma AVSM (Retd). Speaking on the occasion Gen Sharma referred to the life of Dr Radhakrishnan in whose memory this day is celebrated across India. He also drew attention to the eminent role that teachers play in everyone’s life.  

The Hon’ble VC’s speech was followed by a documentary on the life of Dr. Radhakrishnan. This was followed by  an Indian classical solo performance by a student as Guru Vandana. The evening saw many fun activities for teachers and stage performance by students. Some of the interesting activities were the blindfold game, tollywood dance, puzzles, balloon game, one-act-dance and a lyrical dance.

Teachers’ day couldn’t have ended without a performance by teachers. There were singing performances by teachers with Ami-Band. A short movie prepared by the students for the teachers was also screened on the occasion.

The evening concluded with a vote of thanks.

Amity University Madhya Pradesh Organizes the Orientation Programme for New Students

Orientation Programme – 2014-15

The campus of Amity University Gwalior came alive as the Orientation Programme for new undergraduate and postgraduate students commenced on 25 August 2014.

The Orientation Programme for the new  students  was of two days duration i,e 25 and 26 Aug 2014. The programme was organized in the University Auditorium. The aim was to familiarize the students with the various rules and regulations of the university and Amity System of Education and to introduce them to their faculty and respective mentors and break the ice between the students.

On August 25, the programme started at 9:30 in the morning with the distribution of welcome kit to the students. It was followed by a Havan, in accordance with our traditions. This was followed by address to parents, students and faculty by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor.

During the orientation programme, the university authorities including the Hon’ble VC, AUMP, Dean (Academics), Registrar, Director Administration, Controller of Examination, Dean Student Welfare and Director,CRC interacted with the students.

Welcoming the students, the Hon’ble ViceChancellor, Lt Gen V K Sharma AVSM (Retd), opined that the orientation programme helps the students in getting to know the rules and regulations ofthe university. Hon’ble VC also briefed the new students on the issues relatedto the code of conduct, state-of-the-art infrastructure, wi-fi enabled campus and hostel, medical facilities, attendance rules, dress code, university timings, mentor- mentee relationship, sports facilities, and about maintaining discipline in the university campus. He also  briefed the students about the new academic block Block ‘C’ that is coming up  for the students and said it has all the state-of-the-art facilities and is centrally air-conditioned.

Talking on Anti-Ragging measures, Dr R. S. Tomar, Chairman, Anti Ragging Committee advised the students to refrain from any kind of ragging activities and also told that the university authorities will not tolerate any kind of indiscipline from the new or the old students.

The Registrar, Director Administration, Controller of Examination and Dean Student Welfare also briefed the students on aspects pertaining to their departments.

On August 26, MBTI test and group activity was held for all the new  the students by ASCENT, ALS and AIBAS. The day also saw the interaction of the new students with the respective HOIs and faculty members.

With due completion of all registrations, the formal conduct of classes has started from August 27, 2014.
